The Spinal Cord Extends the Central Nervous System

The brain is the central nervous system that includes the cerebellum and brainstem (structure that forms the link between the brain to the spinal cord). These three structures are located in the skull, bone structure, strong and rigid. The spinal cord extends the central nervous system. It ensures the exchange of information between the brain and peripheral organs. The central nervous system and spinal cord are wrapped in a tissue called meninges. Between the different layers of the meninges circulating cerebrospinal fluid which protects and nourishes the brain.

The brain consists of nerve cells, neurons, and cells that provide support, protection and nutrition, the glial cells. It is the proliferation of glial cells, and not that of the neurons that result from major brain cancers (gliomas, astrocytomas and glioblastomas).
